Remembering Mae Chee Sansanee: A Guiding Light on My Meditation Path

As I delve deeper into the world of meditation, one teacher continues to shine brightly in my memory – Mae Chee Sansanee (1953 – 7 December 2021).  Her wisdom and presence left an undeniable imprint on my heart and soul. This blog post is a heartfelt tribute to her legacy and the profound lessons she imparted.

A Sanctuary in the City: Mae Chee Sansanee – More Than a Teacher

Mae Chee Sansanee wasn't just a meditation instructor; she embodied serenity and wisdom. A Theravada Buddhist spiritual teacher and maechi (non-ordained woman monastic), she was a champion for women's roles in Buddhism. Her Bangkok retreat, Sathira-Dhammasthan, became a haven for those seeking peace and a path to enlightenment. During my corporate years, I often found refuge and clarity amidst the daily whirlwind by attending her workshops.

The Radiance of Presence: Lessons in Stillness

One of the most striking things about Mae Chee Sansanee was her presence.  She radiated a calm, glowing energy that uplifted everyone around her.  Simply observing her movements and meditation practice was a lesson in itself. We wore white during sessions, symbolizing a fresh start, a cleansing of both the outer and inner world.

The Transformative Power of Each Step: Walking Meditation

Mae Chee Sansanee's guided walking meditations were truly transformative. At first, slowing down and focusing on each individual step felt challenging. But with practice, I began to appreciate the subtle beauty of the practice. Every step became a mindful journey, filled with the symphony of nature and the rhythm of my breath. This practice instilled in me the importance of patience and mindfulness in navigating life's inevitable hurdles.

A Legacy of Light: Forever Grateful

Although Mae Chee Sansanee is no longer with us physically, her teachings continue to illuminate my path.  Her emphasis on mindfulness, patience, and self-love are lessons I hold close and carry with me every day. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched, and I am forever grateful for the time spent learning at her feet.

This is just one chapter in my ongoing exploration of mindfulness and Buddhist meditation. Stay tuned for future posts where I'll share more about my journey and the incredible teachers who have guided me along the way.
